ASAP-7 AQA-PM Project

Supported in the framework of the seventh Austrian Space Applications Programme (ASAP-7), the Extension of the Air-Quality model for Austria with satellite based Particulate Matter estimates (AQA-PM) project aimed at improving the PM10-forecasts for Austria with the assimilation of satellite based measurements and on-ground measurements, and to provide a comprehensive product-platform. Satellite measurements of the Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) and ground-based PM10-measurements are combined to highly-resolved initial fields using using geo-statistical techniques.

In the framework of the AQA-PM project, lead by the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), Austria, SISTEMA has been in charge of providing high resolution (1km x 1 km) AOT and PM maps retrieved from satellite data using the PM MAPPER® software, to be integrated into the AQA numerical model.

AQA-PM lasted from April 2011 to June 2013. It was demonstrated that that the assimilation of satellite measurements and on-ground measurements into the AQA Model have significantly improved the quality of the provided air quality forecast maps.
